John Owen: Newtown's First Photographer

John Owen (1829 - 1907)  

In a career spanning over forty years, John Owen photographed Mid Wales's great and not so great inhabitants and left an extensive corpus of work.  This was featured in the exhibition on display in the Newtown Textile Museum in 2025.

Sport and Leisure :  Newtown 1850-1914

Fascinating information about the activities of Newtown's population including its early involvement and success in football clubs and the Royal Welsh Warehouse Sport and Recreation Society.

The Warehouse Eleven

Newtown was an early centre of Welsh football. This included teams from the Royal Welsh Warehouse.

Woollen cloth called 'Welsh Plains was produced in mid-Wales in the 1700s and sold to provide clothing for enslaved people in the Caribbean.
